Erika Verzutti’s edition for Nottingham Contemporary, takes as it’s starting point one of the artist’s recent series of digital drawings, which are made using an iPad application that simulates the experience of painting (whether it be the viscosity of a medium or the pressure of a brushstroke).
For Poodle with Mask Peeing, 2021, the digital drawing is printed onto paper. To this, Verzutti integrates process and subtle illusion which playfully disrupts the surface. The impasto ‘brushstroke’ which frames the poodle, appears in relief, but is flat; a debossed line traces the outline of the drawing, resembling an awry etching plate-mark. Verzutti has then hand-painted each print with a splash of yellow watercolour. The combination of elements creates an interplay between flatness and relief, viscosity and liquid, physical and digital form.
Erika Verzutti (b.1971, São Paulo, Brazil) has become known for her sensuous and tactile works, spanning sculpture and painting, that push against the Neo-Modernist and conceptual canon of Brazilian art with irreverence and resolve.
Solo museum shows include: Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris (2019) Aspen Art Museum, Colorado (2019), Pivô, São Paulo (2016), Sculpture Center, New York (2015) and Tang Museum, Skidmore College, New York (2014). Her work has been acquired by major museums, including Tate, London; Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris; Museu de Arte Moderna de São Paulo, São Paulo; and Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York. Alison Jacques London has represented Erika Verzutti since 2014.
This limited-edition work by Erika Verzutti was produced by Nottingham Contemporary on the occasion of Verzutti’s 2021 solo exhibition - the first solo presentation in a UK museum by the Brazilian artist.
