Referencing a new commission of the same name featured in the exhibition - specifically three works titled 'Steel to Rust' 2016, 'Rust to Debris' 2016, and 'Debris to Dust' 2016. These works built on the artist's interest in tracing different botanical and geological histories.
In these work, Nkanga was interested in the possibilities of contamination, decay, and states of mutation or transition. She used different materials – such as clay, steel, textiles and paint – to reflect on the relationships between different entities. The installation’s diverse elements, each underwent a slow transformation, whether due to their encounter with water, air or other invisible particles.
